Richmond, Hobart, Tasmania

Mulberry Cottage was built in 2002 as an "olde worlde" private residence
at the rear of Grannie Rhodes' Cottage, 1830, in the historic Georgian village of Richmond.
The old cottage had proved to be too much of a challenge to restore and renovate for habitation.
Initially it was planned to use it for a museum. The new cottage home is constructed from
the reclaimed wall of Hobart's Old Penitentiary, windows from Hobart's old Marine Board building
and other reclaimed materials, so when you stay, you sleep behind the walls of the old prison!
Gardens are being designed to create a rustic English country atmosphere
and the visitor is often tricked into believing that the house truly is 1800's. The show "Turn the key of time" at Grannie Rhodes 1830 is included in the tariff.

Richmond

Richmond is a charming country Georgian village only 15 minutes from the Hobart Airport.
A lovely place warranting more than one night's stay to cover all there is to see.
Relax and allow yourself time to visit the oldest bridge,
Roman Catholic Church and the oldest gaol (in original condition) in Australia
and maybe take in a spooky ghost tour of the town.
You might also want to visit Oak Lodge, Hobart Model Village and the many shops and art galleries.
Richmond is also a great base from which to travel to Hobart, local vineyards, Port Arthur and the East Coast.

The climate here is varied - a local saying is if you don't like the weather, come back in five minutes.
So please bring layers and expect anything...

That's part of the Tasmanian experience!
